Body Basics was founded in 1995 by Miki A. Coulter. It was later incorporated in 1998 when Miki married Corey A. Rudd. When I, Miki, was studying for my Bachelor of Science at Boise State University, at a doctors urging started working out to battle my eating disorder, Anorexia Nervosa. My weight had decreased to 104 and my clothes were loose at a size 1. Without clothes I looked like a older women with loose flesh and cellulite.
My health had
declined to where I was in danger of being hospitalized so I joined a health class at Boise State. The professor who taught the class helped me to understand how to eat for health and influenced my goal to be muscle building. A passion started to grow as I saw my muscle starved body start to transform into a hard lean body.
It was extremely hard to grasp the concept that at the start I weighed 104 pounds and had 26% body fat and virtually no muscle and in 1 short month I had gained 28 pounds of muscle and decreased my body fat to 19%.
My trainer had to show me weekly that I was not gaining body fat but hard earned muscle. I still had my doubts because I went from a size 1 to a size 4-6 in that month and I was still feeling fat.
The next step was to have me hydrostatically weighed. This is the most honored body fat test in the business and I came out with the same measurements he had done. From then on I was body fat tested on a by-weekly basis by a exercise physiologist at Boise State. When I graduated two years later I was 32 pounds heavier and 15% body fat and wearing size 6 clothes but looked awesome, hard lean muscle and healthy glow to my skin and hair. I decided I wanted the strict regimen of a body builders lifestyle, that way I would still feel in control of my body and I was afraid that if I just tried to maintain this level I would slip back into my old habits of starvation for control. I will always battle the disease mentally and will always be careful to check in with myself and make sure I am practicing healthy ideals. I have worked with several people who have and are battling the disease and I can tell you the best way to a healthy lifestyle for these individuals is to help them to understand how their bodies work and what the difference is to have healthy lean tissue which is denser than fat and how much better we look with healthy lean tissue than a starved skinny fat unhealthy body.
From that point in my life I had such a passion to understand the human body and to work with individuals, especially women struggling with societies pressure to be thin and our own unhealthy patterns that we learn through dieting.
I always tell people YES diets work for a season and then they "bite you in the butt" because they backfire. There is always something to glean from diets, but our metabolism is as individual as our thumbprints and so to say "this diet works for anyone", is a ridiculous statement to make. First I want to see individuals get back to "Basics" of health. Learn why we need fiber, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and that none of these are to be excluded from our diets. I tell people up front I am not a dietician, I have been a professional dieter and I have studied more than most people. I have a dietician who overlooks my programs and I do not try to tell people who have medical conditions how to eat.
Most of my programs start with a metabolic testing of a persons Resting Metabolic Expenditure or RMR. The company I use is New Leaf a sub company of Medi-Graphics a 30 year old company responsible for the metabolic testing machines in hospitals, exercise labs etc. Medi-Graphics took the very expensive laboratory machine and made it into a smaller version that could easily fit into our testing labs.
Don’t be fooled with knock off brands that give you empty promises and cannot do anything more than estimate using the "Harrison Benedict Formula". This formula has been used for years to give you an estimate only, not an actual metabolic test. This cannot give you an accurate test, because these tests cannot give an accurate assessment nor readings for both carbohydrate AND fats. Unless you can tell where the fat burning ends and the carbohydrates begin, you are putting out a lot of money for an estimate that you can do yourself.
So we start with a Resting Metabolic Expenditure Test, done in a controlled setting, then with the data we can get you on the right amount of calories. We do a complete health assessment (see "take a look; health assessment window") |
